In low – land reservoirs you can go crappie fishing much like in natural lakes. Crappie will be called such names by the locals such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Low land reservoirs will hold good populations of calico bass. You will be able to catch crappie with traditional crappie baits in these reservoirs.

Low land reservoirs are th shallowest of the impoundment reservoirs. Many times these reservoirs are no more then 15 foot in depth. The deepest part of low land reservoirs will be the old river channel close to the dam area. Low land reservoirs will have vast flats with timber and thick vegetation ideal habit for papermouthThere is little current in these reservoirs so your crappie fishing patterns will be similar to those you use in a natural lake. For example in a natural lake that is fairly clear water with an abundance of weed vegetation you would concentrate crappie fishing along the edges using various crappie baits like crappie jigs and plastic grubs tipped with wax worms or livebaits such as crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners or small crayfish. In low land reservoirs that are clear with abundant vegetation you would follow the same pattern.

You will locate pole crappie by fishing the edges of weed beds and submerged brush (just like my example above). You will also find paper mouth in the old creek channel or river bed. You will also be ale to catch crappie in large flats where there are roaming calico bass by drifting. Many times you will also find  white perch in the wide inlet areas of the reservoir.

Low land reservoirs will also have many shallow bays and low  islands that are crappie magnets that are great locations for catching crappie. You can drift these areas with your crappie rods set at deferent depths with a combination of crappie rods set up with a crappie jig and a plastic grub tipped with wax worms and also crappie live bait such as crappie minnows or shiners.

You can also go crappie fishing by drifting or trolling points that have a hard bottom. These areas will normally hold roaming pole crappie. You can sometimes catch crappie using submerged crappie crank baits and this is an excellent crappie fishing technique to find what depth the calico bass are located.

Just a note of reference, the old main river or channel will seldom be close to the shore line. This area  is always a hotspot for paper mouth. A good way to locate the old channel is using a topographical map in combination with a GPS and good fishing finder.

If you target submerged structure along the edges of the old channel you can catch crappie.  You can use a re variety of different crappie baits that will allow you to fish very close to the old river channels edge and drop your bait into the drop off. This is an excellent technique to catch crappie that are suspended there

Well that concludes my article about Crappie Minnows. Have a great day and the the best of luck to you on your next fishing trip

Has your crappie fishing lacked a good consistent catch? Are you a beginner crappie angler and confused on where to start? Well you are not alone. Many crappie fisherman struggle to get a consistent catch. Fishing for crappie is like any other sport you need to practice and you need to follow a set of guidelines and rules. I would like to give you some simple crappie catching tips, that can improve your crappie catch.

#1 Guideline When you get out on the water do not just start catching crappie. Chances are what ever you are doing to catch fish will work at other locations too. You need to establish a set pattern that you will use at all the locations you fish at throughout the day. To determine what pattern will work best you need to identify details like: Did you get your crappie hits when your crappie bait was floating downward? At what depth did the crappie strikes occur? Were the hits on the windward side of the structure you were fishing? These are just a few of the details you need to document and take a metal note of. As you get more experienced this list will grow.

#2 Guideline Have you ever bin on the water getting ready to drop your crappie baits and start crappie fishing some structure and trip over something, or drop something in the boat that id noisy? Guess what if there were any large slab crappie in the area you just scared them off. It is very important that you are quiet when you are on the water. Savvy crappie will almost always move out of the area if the hear, or see anything that looks un-natural too them. If you learn this simple rule you will be surprised how your crappie catch will increase. You will probably will start picking up a few large slab crappie too.

#3 Guideline How many times have you been out crappie fishing and you get hungry and reach down and pull out a handful of chips or eat a sandwich, then you go right back to handling your crappie baits? Well crappie can smell the things that you just ate and the different smell may be just enough to cause them not to bite or move off. Next time you eat out on the water wipe your hands clean then rub them with some commercial crappie scent. You will be surprised how much this tip may increase your crappie catch.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

Everyone has there own ideas about the best time to fish when fishing for crappie. One of my colleagues has a job that he has to work from daybreak until dark during the summer months.

Thats probably the reason he loves to go fishing for crappie when he can get out on the ice. Unfortunately it realy the only time he has to go fishing so he makes the best of it and goes ice fishing for crappie. Ice fishing isn’t my thing though… every time I go on the ice, I hear popping noises and visualize huge cracks opening up and dropping me in for an icy dip.

Well enough witht he stories my point is crappie are pretty hardy fish. You can catch them at several different time of the day. In all seasons, and weather. You’ve just got to know how. I have developed a list of crappie fishing tips that I think will be very helpful when you plan on fishing for crappie.

Crappie Fishing Tips #1: Night time is always the right time to catch crappie… expect crappie to bite from dusk until midnight…. during most times of the year.

Tip#2: An even better time to be fishing for crappie in some parts of the country is 6-8am in the morning. It works like crazy in the Northeast.

Tip#3: If you are fishing for crappie in moving water then you will want to to switch between live bait and artificial bait, depending on how active the fish are. Remember crappies are cold-blooded and the water controls their body temperature.Look for places in moving water where crappie might be hiding waiting for bait fish to swim by, you will have to put your bait right in fron tof there nose’s but boy will they realy hit!

When crappie are sluggish it is because the themperature is out of their comfort zone. Kind of like your neighbor that doesn’t have air conditioning or is still using a wood burning stove when things get cold. They just don’t feel like doing anything until its right in their face!

Crappie Fishing Tips #4: For some strange reason only know to the fish, a really good time to be fishing for crappie is during a rainstorm. You don’t want to be out there when it is thundering and lightning, but if it’s just raining , it’s a great time to be fishing for crappie.

Tip#5: If your fishing in a lake, stay close to shore and don’t be afraid to move your bait around. some guys like to just cast and wait, but this can be a bad strategy. When you fishing for crappie you will catch more fish if you go to them instead of waiting for them to come to you. If they are not biting in one place try pie casting in another.
