The crappie is sometimes a very underestimated game fish that has many names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth.  Bait fishing for crappie in the fall can sometimes be very confusing. As the water starts to cool the crappies normal feeding and living patterns are unpredictable. Patterns you were anticipating and using in the late summer months may not work in the fall. The bait fish have stopped spawning so there is more competition for the remaining bait fish. The fact can actually work to your advantage, there are a few facts about bait fishing for crappie in the fall that you need to study on first.

It is true that the bait fish will be larger and you would think that you would need increase your crappie jig size in this fishing situation to match the size of the crappie’s food source and in many occasions you would be right. But what you need to understand in the late fall as the water temperature continues to drop, that the crappie’s metabolism will drop. and the calico bass will not chase your crappie jigs unless you use a very slow bait fishing presentation.

Now I am going to tell you something that goes against your logic and what you would normally do when the food source for the paper mouth is at a larger size. In the later fall and winter you can use smaller jig sizes or use some method to slow way down your larger crappie jigs. The reason many crappie anglers use a smaller bait fishing presentation such as small jigs is because they float downward through the water at much slower pace and perfect for the slow and sluggish pole crappie in the late fall and winter months.

OK I Mentioned above briefly that you can still use larger crappie jigs as your bait fishing method but they need to worked in the water very slowly. If you are going to fish for crappie with a larger crappie jig then you need to use a heavier line because heavy line sinks much slower in the water. Also you a slip bobber to fish in deeper water.

Also, When you catch your firstwhite perch clean the fish and see what the crappie has been eating so you can get a good idea of what the size of the bait fish are they are eating.

Crappie are not built for speed or power and they like to stay close to shallow water for there is plenty of structure and where most of their crappie food is located. The food chain will be the thickest where plankton is the thickest, which normally is located in large flats and bays on the wind ward side. crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch,white perch,pole crappie,strawberry bass and papermouth. You can use crappie baits like crappie jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs and wax worms. Crappie live baits like crappie minnows, shiners, small gizzard shad,maggots,panfish leeches, and crayfish will work well too.

The white perch will relate to weeds in different ways. When you are crappie fishing in lakes and reservoirs that have large areas of weedy vegetation, look for suspended crappies any where from 5 to 15ft of the bottom in 25 to 30 feet of water. The The papermouth will suspend off a drop off lip in the bottom contour during the middle of the day and when there is direct sunlight they will suspend there too.The speckled bass will also suspend at drop off points during cold front conditions when the fish are in a negative feeding pattern. To entice the crappie which are in a neutral or negative feeding mood you can use popular crappie fishing jigs such as the Flu Flu, Chubby Jig, Puddle Jumper, Zetabait Wobbly Eye Jig, Custom Jigs & Spin Shrimpo, Blue Fox Foxee Jig, and the Lindy – Little Joe Timber Jig tipped with crappie live baits such as wax worms,maggots,crappie minnows,shiners,redworms,live nymphs, or crayfish.             The papermouth will many times suspend at the bottom edge of beds at the base when they are in a active feeding mood. Under favorable weather conditions there will be entire schools of  paper mouth that will locate here as long as the crappie food lasts. During heavy feeding periods a regular crappie jig with a plastic grub will catch crappie. This concentration of speckled bass will normally occur in the late afternoon.

Schools of strawberry bass that were suspended along the base of weed edge lines will many times move horizontally along the weed line spending at a depth of 5 to 8 feet below the surface. This movement typically happens in the evening near sunset. Under ideal weather conditions you can sometimes see speckled bass coming to the surface and feeding as far as 100 feet away from the edge of the weed line. Right before night fall is a great time to catch crappie with a flyrod and a floating crappie jig. This one of the few times that papermouth like to feed on the surface.

 In low – land reservoirs you can go crappie fishing much like in natural lakes. Crappie will be called such names by the locals such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Low land reservoirs will hold good populations of calico bass. You will be able to catch crappie with traditional crappie baits in these reservoirs.

 Low land reservoirs are th shallowest of the impoundment reservoirs. Many times these reservoirs are no more then 15 foot in depth. The deepest part of low land reservoirs will be the old river channel close to the dam area. Low land reservoirs will have vast flats with timber and thick vegetation ideal habit for papermouthThere is little current in these reservoirs so your crappie fishing patterns will be similar to those you use in a natural lake. For example in a natural lake that is fairly clear water with an abundance of weed vegetation you would concentrate crappie fishing along the edges using various crappie baits like crappie jigs and plastic grubs tipped with wax worms or livebaits such as crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners or small crayfish. In low land reservoirs that are clear with abundant vegetation you would follow the same pattern.

 You will locate pole crappie by fishing the edges of weed beds and submerged brush (just like my example above). You will also find paper mouth in the old creek channel or river bed. You will also be ale to catch crappie in large flats where there are roaming calico bass by drifting. Many times you will also find  white perch in the wide inlet areas of the reservoir.

 Low land reservoirs will also have many shallow bays and low  islands that are crappie magnets that are great locations for catching crappie. You can drift these areas with your crappie rods set at deferent depths with a combination of crappie rods set up with a crappie jig and a plastic grub tipped with wax worms and also crappie live bait such as crappie minnows or shiners.

You can also go crappie fishing by drifting or trolling points that have a hard bottom. These areas will normally hold roaming pole crappie. You can sometimes catch crappie using submerged crappie crank baits and this is an excellent crappie fishing technique to find what depth the calico bass are located.

 Just a note of reference, the old main river or channel will seldom be close to the shore line. This area  is always a hotspot for paper mouth. A good way to locate the old channel is using a topographical map in combination with a GPS and good fishing finder.

 If you target submerged structure along the edges of the old channel you can catch crappie.  You can use a re variety of different crappie baits that will allow you to fish very close to the old river channels edge and drop your bait into the drop off. This is an excellent technique to catch crappie that are suspended there

As the water starts to cool in natural lakes much of the weed growth on the flats dies off. Some deep lying weeds will remain along the deep edge of weed growth along drop offs. After the weed growth dies off crappies holding in shallow flats will join crappie along drop off edges, so this is one of the locations you will want to target your crappie fishing efforts. Crappies holding in open water will also head for drop off edges. The crappies have some amazing names that local fisherman have given them over the years such as calico bass,speckled bass,speckled perch,white perch,pole crappie,strawberry bass, and paper mouth. Once the pole crappie have moved to drop off ledges normally they will continue to hold there or move to close by deeper rock cover if it is available. You can catch crappie by using crappie jigs tipped with live crappie baits such as crappie minnows,flathead minnows,shiners,and shad if they are there. Fish your crappie baits just vertical or horizontal to identified drop off edge locations or deep rock cover approximately 5 to 10 feet off bottom, papermouth will typically hold at these depths during the late fall going into winter. In natural lakes you will find drop off edges in a variety of different crappie fishing locations. Look for edges there is remaining weed growth such as at locations inside bends in the lake. You will also find excellent drop off edges where there is combination of remaining weed growth and rock cover. Your prime crappie fishing locations to concentrate on in the fall season will be where there is remaining weed growth, and rock cover combined together and adjacent to a drop off into deeper water. You will normally find these locations along bends in the lake contour. Fall papermouth will be normally be feeding on plankton or crappie minnows or shad that are feeding on the plankton. A good fall crappie bait would be artifical crappie baits that resemble crappie minnows or shad or Live crappie baits such as crappie minnows,small shad,shiners, and fathead minnows. You can also use small crayfish when you are fishing off the bottom in rock cover. As the remaining weed beds die off pole crappie will move to rock piles, humps, sloop points, that drop into the lake basin, and transitional points that go from a hard pan bottom to a soft mucky bottom. Concentrate your crappie fishing efforts after the weed die off to the areas just mentioned.
